CPBO has worked with legal departments and ACC Chapters to develop and improve their pro bono programs. These programs are unique and designed to fit the needs and interests of each department and community. While each legal department and ACC Chapter is different, there are successful practices that peer departments and ACC Chapters can learn from and replicate. The best practices below provide examples of methods, tools, and policies to use in developing and expanding pro bono programs.

The ACC Corporate Pro Bono Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a corporate counsel, a group of corporate counsel, a pro bono project, or a corporation in providing pro bono legal services. ACC announces this award annually at the ACC Annual Meeting .

CPBO assists legal departments, in-house counsel, and ACC Chapters in identifying existing pro bono opportunities and developing new models and programs tailored to meet the needs and interests of in-house counsel and their communities. Such programs and models include expanding community service efforts to include a legal component, collaborating with other legal departments, working with nonprofits and community development organizations, and creating organization-wide, impactful projects.

In response to increased demand from legal departments eager to engage in global pro bono, CBPO is aided by PBI’s Global Pro Bono Project in providing resources and services about global pro bono.

Since its founding in 2000, CPBO has worked with hundreds of legal departments and seen tremendous growth in pro bono among in-house counsel. This growth is displayed in CPBO’s publication, CPBO Challenge ® Report: The Development of In-House Pro Bono.
