Description
On July 1, Mark Nessen will have owned Corydon Pharmacy—the legal name of Nessen Pharmacy—for 33 years. He bought it from Charles Nigut in 1981. The little shop on the west side of the Corydon square has been home to a pharmaceutical dispenser for over 100 years, so when Hy-Vee takes over ownership on Aug. 1, it will be an adjustment, but one Nessen believes will be beneficial to the welfare of his town. When asked if it seems like 33 years, Nessen pauses, and replies, “Yeah.
Tony Funk has worked as an EMT for Wayne County Hospital for 16 years. He is also the proud new owner of several elk that graze on brush and broad leaves near Corydon Lake. “Elk were native here a long time ago,” Funk says. In the late 1980s, elk came back to Corydon after a hiatus. Funk does not want to see them leave again, for a number of reasons. Corydon, as opposed to a metropolitan area such as Des Moines, is punished because it is small. It must fight for the funds necessary to sustain itself. Sometimes it must beat its own path to get things done.
“Brandon actually refused to wear anything Wisconsin until this year,” Cassandra says. “It’s kind of fun to have that rivalry.” Cassandra chose Wisconsin, partially for beautiful downtown Madison, and partially because they chose her.
