Kathy on the crux pitch of the Black Dike on Cannon Cliff, New Hampshire. Shot in February 1998, this photo shows the route in unusually thick conditions. Normally there is not enough ice to climb the pitch from the bottom as Kathy is doing here. Leaner conditions usually require the climber to traverse in across the rock from the right slightly above Kathy's level. We have another two pitches of generally easier climbing to go to reach the top and the easy walk off through the woods. The Black Dike is a big climb with a decidedly alpine feel.
