Solid surface is a man-made stone. It comes in scores of colors, and with the many color choices available, it offers design alternatives that no other material can. Some of the solid-surface manufacturers offer products that can be thermoformed, that is, they can be "bent" to virtually any shape desired. (See "Advantages" below.) Most manufacturers warranty their products for 10 years or more against defects; not many products today can boast of such an enduring warranty period. What differentiates one manufacturer from another?Mostly, it's the chemical composition of their products. Each manufacturer has proprietary formulations that are used to create the various selections of colors and textures. Although the manufacturers vary the percentages, the two primary components used are acrylic and polyester. Some products contain a mixture of both. And, of course, each manufacturer produces the special adhesives that fabricators use to ensure inconspicuous seams.
