Description

Private waste treatment is a growing concern nationwide, but is just emerging in California with tons of opportunity for both the Liquid Waste Haulers looking to maximize their profit potential and for technology manufacturers and suppliers providing products and services. COWA will keep their eyes on this one as it too offers job creation in our industry.

It was a winner with 30 technology exhibitor partners showing their wares to over 140 attendees. Our program host, the Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel took great care of us providing the finest of food and service in their recently remodeled conference facility. Combining the Technology Exhibition with two other programs, the EPA funded Regulators Forum and the NAWT Waste Treatment workshop enabled COWA to keep expenses to a minimum and provide a very cost effective event for all.

Late in the process we were confronted with a major design issue when more recent 2011 flow data requested by the Regional Board revealed a few daily peaks approaching 40,000 GPD due to unusually high attendance events at the Camp. Jason and I scrambled in the midst of the permitting process to incorporate 20,000 gallons peak storage. This was in August, approaching the rainy season with a construction schedule calling for completion before Camp would re-open in the Spring. SBI had already ordered the septic tanks and AX-Max units from Orenco so we had to work within those constraints.

Given the complex terrain of the conifer grove with slopes varying from 15 to greater than 40 percent, we selected sub-surface drip irrigation (SSDI) technology which provides maximum siting flexibility and dispersal capacity under these challenging conditions. It would also be least disruptive of the dense tree root structure. As an additional design challenge neither the package plant or the lift station locations were optimal to serve this remote dispersal field.

COWA is excited to be partnering with RCAC to bring Decentralized Wastewater education and training to California’s rural communities. RCAC offers valuable services for small communities in their water and wastewater infrastructure planning and management process and COWA is proud to be their link to the Decentralized option. We look forward to working with RCAC to develop and deliver our new Small Community Assessment program in 2013.
