Cowan Brothers LLC includes three brothers: Tork Cowan, Treg Cowan and Tigh Cowan in an operation that extends south of Highmore, South Dakota to the rugged breaks of the Missouri River. We are a working cattle ranch running a yearling operation and raising registered performance Quarter Horses. Our foundation in the horse business started with the vision of Stanley Johnston from Ree Heights, South Dakota. Stanley introduced Poco Speedy by Poco Bueno , Orphan Drift by Driftwood Ike, Doc's Jack Frost by Doc Bar, Sak Em San by Peppy San and many other bloodlines into the state. Rich in Driftwood blood, Stanley's horses reached all areas of the country with the reputation as being the 'right kind'. We rode and rodeo'd off of many of Stanley's horse including three full brothers to Sun Frost. Pat Cowan, our father, shared Stanley's vision of the versatile horse; believing in horses with heart, intelligence, athletic ability, speed, and good size with looks to match. He traveled the country looking and sorting for the right bloodlines. He combined the best of cowhorse and speedhorse from his experiences as a rancher, race horse trainer, and rodeo contestant.Starting with the Driftwood, Poco Beuno, Doc Bar combination that Stanley had established, dad added the influence of Red Man through John Red AAA daughters; Boon Bar through Boon Dox John, and Peppy San Badger through Tuff Time Peppy.
