Can you help make this a reality? We have taken the first step toward making the Old Convent CCSP’s permanent home by purchasing a long term lease. So starting this fall students and staff are enjoying our Old Convent campus. The second step is to raise $200,000 to payoff the lease by March 1, 2009. Our ultimate goal, and third and final step, is to raise $1 million by May 2009 to purchase the Old Convent. Please help us achieve our goals by considering a gift to CCSP. - PO Box 1283 - Julian, CA 92036 Or, donate online with a credit card through our secure PayPal account.The dream that was CCSP South Pacific was hatched in the Fall of 2002: Bringing North American students to New Zealand and Samoa for a semester program in creation care. Since then, the program has been located at a variety of wonderful (but short-term) locations throughout New Zealand. Students have been based at Great Barrier Island, in a Christian community in Auckland, at a stunning camp south of Christchurch, the charming beach town of Piha, and an urban green-belt suburb. All these sites have afforded wonderful learning opportunities for students, but they have also helped staff discern what type of place would be ideal for CCSP. We have found it: the mid-size town of Kaikoura on the South Island. Kaikoura offers the best of New Zealand. First, it is often referred to as the “Marine Serengeti.” People from all around the world flock to Kaikoura for whale watching and marine biology due to its offshore deep sea trench. The Seaward Kaikoura mountain range shoots up just miles from the coast. And in between the shore and this branch of the Southern Alps lies the classic New Zealand landscape: rolling farmland and green expanses dotted with livestock. In a single sweeping glance, one can see the ocean, pastoral expanse and snow-capped mountains. In short, it’s gorgeous. It also happens to be perfect for students. It’s big enough to serve our students and staff (all amenities from a grocery store to hospital, all within easy biking distance) but it’s small enough that CCSP can have an authentic local presence over time. If all that wasn’t cool enough, we have also found the perfect campus. The Old Convent started 100 years ago as just that, a convent housing French nuns who taught school to local kids. Years ago it was converted to a bed and breakfast. Located on two lushly landscaped acres, it has an 18-room main building with a classroom space, commercial kitchen, dining room and many nooks and crannies for students to hang out. The property also comes with a director’s residence and plenty of office and storage space and even a token sheep. The perfect location, the perfect campus...can you see why we are furiously weaving this nest? CCSP regularly produces students energized and equipped to lead the church and the world in caring for God’s creation. A long-term home for students and staff will provide stability, authenticity and long-term partnership with local people and organizations. It will also free us up to take the program to even greater heights.
