Founded in 1915 by William O'Neil and his partner, Winfred Fouse, General Tire and Rubber Company was an outgrowth of Western Tire & Rubber Company. At the time, General Tire entered a market with over 300 competitors, but was determined to get a market share of replacement tire sales. The first tire that General Tire mass-produced was the General Jumbo, a pneumatic truck tire that was first in its class of tire. In the mid-1920's, General invented the General Balloon Jumbos, the first tire to only need 12 pounds of air pressure revolutionizing all tire manufacturing concepts. By 1955, General finally entered the passenger car replacement tire market. General Tire and Rubber Company changed their name in 1984 to GenCorp, Inc, before getting purchased by Continental AG of Hannover, Germany in 1987. Presently, General Tire is wholly owned subsidiary of Continental Tire North America, Inc and leads the pack in development, production, and marketing of quality tires for automobile applications.

Incorporated in 1888, founding brothers Édouard and André Michelin started the Michelin Rubber Factory in Paris, France. The small Rubber Company has now grown into the world largest tire manufacturer. The first MICHELIN® Radial tire was introduced in 1946, titled the X Tire. The design of the X Tire is now the standard design of current world passenger and light truck tires, with minor improvements added over the years. Michelin has grown steadily in size, and in 2007, the company employed 113,500 people in several countries around the world. After being founded in 1978, Crothers Tire has been located at 110 Linwood Avenue in Whitinsville, MA for the last 35 years as a full service automotive repair and tire center. Fredrick Crothers and Phillip Manning originally started the business, but in 1978, Thomas Crothers Sr. took the reigns of the family business and changed the name to Crothers Tire. Since then, Tom Sr. and sons, Tom Jr. and Jim, have managed the shop. Joann Crothers, the mother of Tom Jr. and Jim, oversees bookkeeping and payroll.
