Description
On March 13, 1968, the General Assembly of Virginia amended Title 15.1, Chapters 34 and 35 of the Code of Virginia to permit the formation of Planning District Commissions (PDCs) throughout the state. This amendment, once known as the Virginia Area Development Act, is now the Regional Cooperation Act. For thirty years, Planning District Commissions have been providing assistance to local governments and their citizens with issues including land use planning and regulation, transportation, solid waste management, water and waste water utilities, housing, economic development, water resource management, and human services. Cooperative, cost-saving solutions to problems are addressed at the PDCs through their regional efforts. The Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, which was chartered on September 30, 1969, is comprised of five counties, five cities, and eleven towns.
