House of Delegates packets will be posted each month prior to the meetings. Delegates are encouraged to print out relevant school information to post on school bulletin boards. Since February 2009, CTU has been working on behalf of our members to negotiate with the Chicago Board of Education on its plan to limit the choice of providers for 403(b) contributions. Under the plan, CPS would be the party that collects and controls all of the fees associated with this program. School Board President Michael Scott was serving as a mediator for this issue, which we hoped to resolve by the end of the year. However, with his untimely death and the current uncertainty surrounding negotiations, it is important for all CTU members to become involved in our efforts to have the Board respect the Union’s position. At Mr. Scott’s request, CTU developed a compromise that would be agreeable to all parties. We accepted the Board’s proposal that Great West Life & Annuity Insurance Company become the 403(b) plan administrator, coordinating compliance for all current plans, but only if the following issues were resolved. CPS Collection and Control of Members’ Money CTU will not agree to let CPS or any third party collect and control any fees associated with members’ voluntary contributions. In today’s uncertain economic times, the Board of Education needs to keep its hands off your retirement plans. New Participants CPS originally wanted to move all employee holdings since 2002 over to Great West. At our most recent meeting, it was suggested that current participants could stay with their current provider, but all new participants and new hires would be offered only the Great West option effective January 1, 2010. We object, insisting that all employees have the right to decide which company and which investment products they want for their own money. Let the current vendors and Great West compete for members’ voluntary investment dollars on the basis of price and service, and let the best vendor(s) win. Transfers While there is agreement that existing participants will not be required to transfer their post-2002 assets, no accounts should be transferred to Great West or any other vendor unless the participant makes a positive election in writing to do so. We need your assistance in gathering the signatures of the CTU members at your school protesting the attempt by CPS to take control of our money. Click here to download a copy of the petition.
