DC Prep was founded in 2003 by a diverse, dedicated, and knowledgeable team determined to increase the educational opportunity for children in Washington. Our intent was to bring the lessons learned by high-performing charter schools nationwide to bear on the tremendous need in Washington, and to create an effective organization capable of opening and running high-quality schools on a large scale in DC. The first step was to open an extended middle school DC Prep Edgewood Middle School serving students in the 4th 8th grades. The school has a straightforward mission to provide students with an outstanding education that emphasizes rigorous academics and character development that will prepare them for success in college-preparatory high schools. We are ensuring that students even those who enter DC Prep far below grade level accomplish this goal through a comprehensive, research-based curriculum, a thoughtfully developed character and leadership program, and a highly skilled and committed staff. Now in our fourth year, DC Prep has demonstrated uncommon success in student achievement, parent satisfaction, and organizational development. The leadership team is now poised to build upon the experience gained with the first school and undertake an ambitious expansion that will positively influence public education reform in Washington.
