Deep Ellum was founded in 1884 as an industrial area. The first factory was The Munger Improved Cotton Machine Company. Deep Ellum has the distinction of being the site of a Ford plant in 1913, that, in addition to a plant in Detroit, assembled Model T Fords. With the passage of time, the nature of this area of Old East Dallas changed to a haven for blues and jazz musicians and, later, for artists. In the late 1930's, it was not a savory area, but one in which scammers, pickpockets, drug dealers, and thieves were prevalent.
