Old Town Alexandria is one of Virginia’s truly historic places and indeed, holds an important place in our nation’s history. Founded in 1749, it is the historical seat of the larger city of Alexandria itself. Located along the Potomac River, the fledgling town played a pivotal role in the emerging tobacco trade and was later caught up in the conflict of the Civil War, as the longest occupied territory by the Confederacy. Today, this neighborhood combines the charm of a bygone era with an eclectic modern energy.
