These are boom times for the concept of “corporate personhood.” Corporations are people? Mitt Romney got mocked during the 2012 presidential campaign for the very idea. But it turns out the principle has been lurking in U.S. law for more than a century, and the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, gave it more oomph last week when it ruled that certain businesses are entitled to exercise religious rights, just as do people.

OBA Public Service Award WCA Singled Out for Service to Women By Andy Roberts The Daily Record Amy Richardson has a statistic she’d like you to consider: One in three women will be a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault in their lifetime. For Richardson, president and CEO of the Women’s Center for Advancement, along with her staff and volunteers, that means a lot of work. It’s a number that should keep you up at night as it does the increasing number of women who are victims of those crimes, and the growing number of professionals and volunteers who are dedicated to helping them.

After earning an A.B. at Dartmouth College, Bradford began law school in Berkeley in 1962, just as turbulent times were getting underway at Cal. The Free Speech movement and numerous other causes sparked student rallies, demonstrations and seemingly unending turmoil. “People with differing views had different ways of expressing those views, including the use of violence,” Bradford said. “The whole experience did change my views, in a positive way. I was pretty conservative when I arrived and I gained some insights that made me more liberal, on social issues, anyway.

After more than four decades as a lawyer, Bradford has seen “dramatic” changes in the legal profession.
