The Darke County Health Department is a local government agency who’s mission is to develop and maintain an efficient and effective system which will provide for the highest quality of public health services and to promote and protect the Darke County Community’s physical, mental, social, and environmental well being. The Health Department has developed this web site to provide useful information to the public. The Darke County Health Department has tried to present all information in an accurate, complete, and honorable fashion. It will also try to keep it updated as much as possible.

The Community Health Nursing Services Division is responsible for meeting the collective health needs of the citizens of Darke County by identifying health problems and managing interactions around those identified needs. The goal is to protect and promote the health of all citizens of Darke County through assessment, development of programs to meet the identified needs, and assure that the programs developed actually meet the needs. This is general and comprehensive nursing practice, which includes, families, and groups, with the dominant responsibility to the population as a whole.

The Future Our history has taught us many things such as the importance of immunization of children and elderly in prevention of infectious disease. You will notice how early in our history infectious diseases such as influenza and pneumonia were the leading causes of death; however, through immunizations and improvements in sanitation these numbers declined. People started living longer, and chronic diseases became a major concern. Heart Disease continues to be the leading cause of death within Darke County today.

The Darke County Health Department has had a long history in providing services to the residents of Darke County. We have composed a timeline of major events that occurred within our history so that you may gain a feeling of how we started and how we got to where we are today. Many of you may be surprised to learn how recent in our history that a particular regulation came into existence. We have listed when the regulation first came into existence; however, the form that regulation is in today may be much different then its original form.
