It recently garnered an additional $28 million, reaching a total of $150 million, according to Patrick Thibodeau at Computerworld. “This Canadian company was started 15 years ago and is one of the most tenacious and longest-running tech start-ups around.” D-Wave’s computer chips, according to the company’s claims, implement so-called quantum annealing, but debate is ongoing among researchers concerning whether they actually provide a benefit over classical computers. The small chip (about the size of a thumbnail), however, must be backed with relatively large and expensive infrastructure: cryogenic equipment about the size of a sauna, according to one comparison.
