In 1963, a very young Thomas Taylor took over operations of the firm and began to build on Mr. Chappell’s legacy. Our award-winning Texas-based practice with offices in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio serves a national client base, with completed projects from Seattle to Miami, as well as Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.

We provide forensic engineering on structural issues associated with building construction. Our 75-year history as structural design engineers on a wide array of major building projects gives us the experience and the tools to analyze almost any structural issue and arrive at a sound conclusion and recommendation.

Datum was founded in Dallas in 1937 by Mr. Frank Chappell, a much-admired engineer whose works included the 3525 Turtle Creek Apartments, the General Services Administration Building, and the Cotton Bowl, among several other buildings at Fair Park.
