Real sustainability is about simultaneously being profitable and responding to the reality and concerns of the world in which we operate. For small commercial projects in Alaska, Deadtree Design will occasionally do the local leg work in researching, designing and documenting the bulk of a project, working within the license requirements of an engineer or architect on an as-needed basis. This has had the effect of dramatically reducing design fees relative to construction costs, as well as opening the door to creative possibilities beyond what small business budgets might ordinarily allow. Commercial design in its scale and its complexity is usually beyond the reach of the sole practitioner. But as a local specialty, DTD can offer a small business the kind of attention to detail that larger firms can't match. It's a matter of economics, but it's also locale. No one better knows the people, climate, history and terrain, which is no small matter when it comes to informing a design. Further, no larger firm has ever moved to the region for love of the land or as a source of inspiration for their art. Commercial design is simply another opportunity to tap into that source. Art and commerce might seem like opposites, but even opposites are known to attract, and there can be chemistry between them. But energy might be a better word, since it is energized patrons who will frequent a business. Even if it's gas and groceries, people are drawn to "happening" places that are vibrant, well lit and reflective of location and clientele. What's more, and this is the bottom line, rarely do these ingredients combine by accident.
