The primary function of the facility is to provide radiation therapy for outpatients in the general service area of Stevens Hospital. Presently therapy is performed utilizing one linear accelerator at the PSTI facility. The present facility provides service for 25 to 30 patients per day. With the installation of a CT Scanner, the center will be better able to diagnose and form treatment plans for patients. Patients originate from the service area and also from the hospital's inpatient medical oncology service located as part of the institute.

Phase I enlarged the existing Science Building with a 31,900 square feet addition and included remodel work that joined the new addition with two existing building wings. The project provides up-to-date facilities for many of the high hazard areas within this science research and teaching facility. The majority of the new spaces serve the Biology Department and, to various extents, the Departments of Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Botany. A 1,400 square feet greenhouse provides botany research and teaching space, along with three large teaching laboratories, all included as part of Phase I.

Jon H. Decker has been Principal-in-Charge for the firm's numerous healthcare projects, which include research, teaching and clinical facilities for more than 28 years. As founder of Decker Architects in 1971, he has maintained, on each project, continuous involvement from early planning/programming phases through to construction. Mr. Decker's experience in programming, planning and design has resulted in a specialized expertise for the firm in the healthcare field of architecture.

The project is a major addition and alteration to the existing Naval Hospital at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The 60,000 square foot addition, including a new entrance is a one-level expansion to the west of the existing hospital, extending the existing courtyard. The addition included emergency, radiology, pharmacy and laboratory areas are grouped adjacent to the existing building. Outpatient clinics and administration areas are consolidated to provide flexibility and expandability.

This team approach has been able to protect clients from excessive building costs by knowing the physical constraints of each project and the regulations imposed by prevailing jurisdictions. These savings have been realized through cost/benefit decision making and project scheduling that have been established to develop the most efficient approach with the shortest time-period for construction.
