Description

The DEFFA Newsletter is the publication of the Downeast Friends of the Folk arts. It is a schedule of folk music and dance events, predominantly in the State of Maine and coastal New Hampshire. These events include concerts, contradances, international folk dance, jam sessions, music swaps, and festivals. Many of these events occur on a regular basis, but many other fun things to see and do happen more sporadically. Some of these are listed here. You can sometimes find more about what's going on in the Maine folk scene from the Dirty Linen Maine page. If you really want to keep on top of it, you can subscribe to the DEFFA Newsletter, which is published at the beginning of each month. Many people are sometimes daunted by the idea of travelling into Maine. There seems to be a certain mythology about the attitudes and demeanor of Maine natives. Visitors seem to think that a typical conversation might go like: Ingenuous Visitor: Can I take this road to East Vassalboro? Mainer: You better leave it right where it is. While this sort of behavior may have been prevalent in the past, such things are rare today. We have a new governor up here who has told us that we'll all be happier if we are nice to tourists. We get to keep more of their money that way.
