"Last year, over one third of Ohio's 130,000 kindergarteners arrived on their very first day of school not prepared to succeed as learners. The Ohio Library Council and the State Library of Ohio have teamed up to make sure that all of our children are Ready To Read." (Ohio Ready to Read) There are 6 early literacy skills--Print Awareness, Print Motivation, Vocabulary, Letter Knowledge, Phonological Awareness, and Narrative Skills--that the Ohio Ready to Read program are promoting. These 6 skills help children understand letters, words, and reading and prepares them for school. With help from *Ohio Ready to Read and *Every Child Ready to Read, libraries in Ohio are revamping storytimes to incorporate these early literacy skills. Print Awareness is simply noticing print, knowing how to handle a book, and knowing how to follow words on a page. Print Motivation this is a child’s interest in and enjoyment of books and reading books. (Print Motivation is one of the most important skills any child can learn) Vocabulary is knowing the names of things, feelings, concepts and ideas, so naming and explaining new objects and feelings to your child will add to his/her vocabulary. Letter Knowledge is simply knowing letters are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds, and recognizing letters everywhere. (For example, point out the letters on a cereal box, license plate, or magazine and name the letter(s) for your child.) Phonological Awareness is being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words (rhyming sounds) Narrative Skills is the ability to describe things and events and retell stories.
