Special Olympics is a national program for people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics of Delaware County (SODC) contributes to the physical, social and psychological development of the athletes. Through successful experiences in training and competing in sports, they gain confidence and build a positive self-image which carries over into the classroom, home, work place and community. For many of the athletes, Special Olympics is their social life. Special Olympics began in the early 1960's, Ohio's involvement began in the late 1960's and SODC became involved in late 1987. In 1987 SODC offered 3 sports. They were basketball, bowling and track-n-field. There were approximately 20 athletes in the organization at that time. We now service over 85 athletes and are continuing to grow.. The sports offered have expanded to include swimming, soccer, cheer leading, bocce ball and power lifting plus the three original sports we started with. We attend many meets including the Ohio State Summer Games at Ohio State University.
