Maryland has many professional and technical workers which attracts companies to the state. The Port of Baltimore allows for easy shipment of cargo from all over the world. There are many federal agencies within the state including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Security Agency (NSA) among others. Besides shipping and government contracting, Maryland attracts many other businesses such as manufacturing, tourism, service industries, financial companies, insurance and real estate, which are all important to the economy. Many Marylander's are employed with the federal government and work in either Maryland offices or in Washington, D. C. Other sources of income in Maryland are agriculture, farming which yields corn, hay, tobacco, soybeans and other crops as well as income from livestock (broiler chickens) and livestock products. Maryland has recognizable companies such as Lockheed Martin and Black & Decker , McCormick and Perdue but also has many small, minority and women-owned businesses.
