Diamond D Angus heifers were put on a total forage ration. They were sent to Thousand Hills Cattle Company at Cannon Falls, MN. These heifers averaged 683-pounds hot carcass weight and they all graded choice. They all brought a premium, and they averaged $1200. per head. Diamond D Angus was fortunate enough to have their long yearling bulls and the heifers ultra-sounded by Dr. Allen Williams and Clay Nash.. They scored consistently well in all areas and exceptionally high on tenderness, which makes them good candidates for the grass fed beef market and also the grain fed beef market. We realize not all cattle are suitable to make quality grass-fed beef, but genetics is the key factor. The bulls and females for our November 12, 2009 Sale are being forage tested. No grain products or supplements are fed at Diamond D Angus. The emphasis here on the ranch has been placed on efficiency, moderate frame, and high maternal mothers. We like a 4-frame cow that will weigh 1200 to 1300 pounds in good flesh. These are the cows that will last in the herd. This is not a new direction or philosophy for Diamond D Angus. We have been on a consistent course with very little variation for over forty two years. Diamond D Angus Genetics have been very influential in the Tallgrass Beef Company program. Seed stock from DDA have been heavily used in many of the commercial herds which supply finished cattle to Tallgrass. We have been pleased with the tenderness, marbling, degree of finish, and retail cutout in DDA influenced crossbred cattle. Our commercial producers have also been pleased with the maternal ability, fertility, adaptation, and ease of fleshing of the replacement females produced by the use of DDA sire genetics. In a quick analysis of data from DDA influenced cattle that have been harvested in the Tallgrass program over the last three years, we find that these cattle perform well for us and with a high degree of consistency. DDA influenced cattle that have been forage finished for Tallgrass average 58% or higher dressing percentage, over 60% have graded Low Choice or better on forage, with over 75% High Select or better. Retail yield has averaged 67% or better. DDA influenced cattle have also provided Tallgrass with a high percentage of Upper 2/3rd Choice and even USDA Prime cattle. These cattle tend to grow quickly to the finishing stage(800 lbs+) and then start fattening, as we desire. The consistency of performance has been remarkable across herds, regions, and environments.
