Description

Reading John Marks review of your Silent Speaker II made me want to build my own version of it. Not that I have any experience in speaker building. I’ve re-foamed a set of woofers recently if that counts.

There is nothing that government can do to create develop or stimulate production or prosperity — except, get out of the way. What government can do is to provide an environment in which people can labor, produce goods and exchange them. The most important elements of this environment are personal freedom (to work and trade) and the unconditional right of private property. The U.S. constitution was designed to provide this kind of environment.

Direct Acoustics, founded in 1995, is the brainchild of Winslow Burhoe, an important figure in the history of modern loudspeaker design. In 1960, Burhoe had been studying pipe organ at the New England Conservatory when he was chosen for an internship at Acoustic Research, and the direction of his life was set. He assisted Edgar Villchur on the design of the AR4.

In a two-way system, the low end of the tweeter’s frequency response and the high end of the woofer’s frequency response. The tweeter’s low end therefore should be just about the same as the high end of the woofer. One advantage to a speaker company which manufactures its own drivers, rather than buying them ready made, is that the designer can precisely control frequency response through precise variations in such factors as coil mass and cone shape.
