Diuguid Funeral Service has the distinction of being the second-oldest funeral home in continuous operation in the United States. The firm began in 1820 by furniture maker Sampson Diuguid. During the Civil War, the firm was involved in the burial of no less than nine Confederate Generals, including Stonewall Jackson and Jubal Early. In 1872, the original building at 616 Main Street was replaced by a four-story brick structure that stood until its demolition 101 years later. The Rivermont Chapel was constructed in 1933, and in recent years two additional modern facilities have been built on Timberlake Road and Wiggington Road. For an era spanning 128 years, four generations of the Diuguid family operated the funeral business. During that time, Diuguids introduced a number of innovations to Central Virginia, including a rubber-tired hearse and the first motorized hearse in the Commonwealth. Today, Diuguid's continues to serve the community with its experienced funeral professionals, bringing 115 years of funeral experience to the business, as well as individuals that are involved and devoted to the community.
