Divorce Helpline was founded in 1989 by three California attorneys who envisioned a better way to perform divorce services in California more efficiently, more compassionately, and more competently. It involved major improvements when compared to the adversarial system, where husband and wife are pitted against each other in court, with expensive attorneys on each side. Attorney Ed Sherman is an award-winning legal author and publisher. His publishing company, Nolo Press Occidental, has been a pioneer in the divorce field for more than thirty years. Attorneys Peggy Williams and Anne Lober had practiced mediation and non-adversarial dispute resolution for many years before joining with Ed to begin Divorce Helpline. Peggy brought special skills to the practice of law; she was a college English professor for seventeen years before she went to law school. Anne is licensed as a Certified Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California. In January 2000 an outstanding staff attorney, Janet Thompson, became a partner. Janet has special expertise in financial and accounting matters, and acts as a Commissioner on the San Jose Appeals Board. Charma Pipersky, one of the first employees of the firm, became a partner in 2002. In addition to being an excellent consulting attorney, she is an expert in pension distribution and the orders required to divide pensions and associated assets.
