Some client families do raise their own service dog candidates from puppies. But some cannot. In order to provide service dogs to those families, DFA has to have volunteers who are willing to raise a puppy for approximately its first year. Raisers keep the puppies in their homes, working with DFA around the home. Over time, the puppies begin going to many public places, and sometimes even to work with the volunteers. One of the most important criteria for a foster is that the puppy not be left alone for the entire working day.
