The Project Management Institute (PMI) has developed an internationally recognized benchmark for project managers--the PMP Certification--awarded to experienced project managers who pass a qualifying exam. PMI's purpose is to foster "the development, maintenance, evaluation, promotion and administration of a rigorous, examination-based, professional certification program of the highest caliber." The exam is based substantially on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), a base line manual developed by PMI that details expectations for project managers across knowledge areas and industries, from construction and government to clinical trials and software and hardware product development.
