Description
On May 13, 1974, the Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association (DPSOA)* was chartered. Over 3,050 DPS employees, representing all services of the Department, are voting members of the Association. DPSOA offers and executes programs that benefit Texas Troopers and the communities around them. These programs include the "Trooper Teddy" Program which distributes teddy bears through Texas Highway Patrolmen to traumatized children at accident scenes and in domestic violence cases. The Death Benefit Fund offers member's families a money entitlement for passed officers. The DPSOA Scholarship Program offers high school graduates help with the costs of continuing their education. DPSOA provides financial assistance to DARE and other anti-drug programs throughout the state of Texas, and also has a Political Action Committee Fund (PAC) which assists in lobbying for improvements within the State Legislature. Furthermore, DPSOA holds a position to represent Texas in the National Troopers Coalition. In addition to these programs, DPSOA also publishes a quarterly magazine. This publication, DPSOA Magazine, has a circulation of approximately 3,600 copies. DPSOA Magazine was recognized as the best Police Association Magazine in 1989 by Washington Crime News Services.
