Description
Search engine placement refers to the placement, or ranking, of a website in the search engine results list. Search engine placement involves the process of placing the website as high as possible in the search results by carefully researching and selecting certain keywords or phrases. Placement at or near the top of the rankings on a search engine page increases the number of people, or searchers, who visit the website. A query on a crawler-based search engine usually turns up thousands of matching web pages. In most cases, only the ten most relevant matches are displayed on the first page and most searchers will usually find a result they like in the top 10-20 results. Naturally, anyone who runs a website wants to try to be in those top 10-20 results or “matches. ” A top 10 position on a major search engine guarantees high levels of traffic. Tips for high level search engine placement: Carefully pick target keywords. What is your website about? How will people search for your web page? What will they type in the search box? These words are your “target keywords. ” Target keywords should always be at least two or more words long. Many sites make the mistake of using only a single word. An example would be a website about doll collecting. Don ’t rely on the single word “doll ” for your keyword because there will be way too much competition. Pick phrases with two or more words, such as “doll collecting ” or “doll collectors ” and you ’ll have a better chance with search engine placement. Where you position your keywords on your web pages is also very important. Make sure your target keywords are in the HTML title tag. Your keyword phrases should be relatively short and reflect what your website is all about. Think of your keywords as a newspaper headline, which will appear in search engine listings and may entice a user to click through to your website. Also use your target keywords in the first paragraphs of your web page content. One tip to keep in mind is that using tables in your content can push your text further down the page, which will make your keywords appear lower on the page. Create relevant content using HTML text on your pages so that search engines can read it. Use HTML hyperlinks to the home page that lead to the major inside pages or sections of your website, so that the search engine will find and follow them. Consider a site map page with text links to every page within your site, which will help the search engines locate pages within your web site. Make sure your website naturally points to different pages from within your site, and this will also increase the odds that search engines will follow links and find more of your website. Building links will help improve how well your pages perform in the link analysis system. Ideally, you want links from good web pages that are related to the topics you want your website to be searched on. How do you find good links? Go to a major search engine and type in the target keywords of your website. Visit the pages that come up and ask the site owner if they would like to link to your website. Some will - but some won ’t.
