St. Marys was founded in 1847 as St. Marys Mission and headquarters of the Pottawatomie Reservation of the time. A major last stop on the Independence branch of the Oregon-California Trail for over a decade, St. Marys provided a welcome respite for already weary travelers facing a trip of 2000+ miles West. Both the Smoky Hill Trail and the Military Trail from Ft Leavenworth to Ft Riley also passed through St. Marys.

Onaga is a surprising (to some) center of commerce and industry! It is home to a new manufacturing plant, a growing investment portfolio service center, a number of agricultural value-added producers, a regional transportation company and the headquarters of both a comprehensive regional heatlh care system and a regional school district.

We are proud that the communities of Pottawatomie County are safe, clean, blessed with high quality education, health care and transportation. Some of our most rural communities also have broad-band internet access, as does every dwelling and business in our primary city. We are working with communications companies and local communities to expand that coverage throughout the county at present.

Pottawatomie County ( www.pottcounty.org ) is a full service county, governed by an elected three-member county commission and managed by a professional county administrator.
