ELT can trace its beginnings back to the late 1970's when our founder, Tim Wright, was working for Xerox. Our founder recognized a growing need and business opportunity that resulted from the introduction of high-speed laser printers by Xerox. In 1981 he left Xerox and opened a service bureau using high-speed duplicators and laser printers. In 1983 we discovered that the Xerox printer could print on vinyl shelf labels, and started producing shelf labels for regional grocery wholesale companies. In fact ELT was the first company in the United States to print vinyl shelf labels on a high-speed laser printer. Prior to ELT entering the shelf label market, the major shelf label service bureaus were printing shelf labels on offset presses and most price changes took over two weeks to produce at a very high price.In 1985 Mr. Wright attended a computer show were he discovered the first desktop laser printer that had an intelligent controller, and a feeding mechanism that appeared would feed vinyl label stock. After this show he met with the Fleming Companies and asked if they would be interested in jointly developing a shelf label printing system that could be used by Fleming's independent retailers to print their own shelf Labels. With Fleming's assistance, our LabelMaster software was designed specifically for the creation and printing of shelf labels and it was introduced to the retail marketplace in early 1987.LabelMaster was the first software entry to the retail marketplace designed specifically on the needs of the retail market for printing shelf labels. Not only did ELT introduce to the retail marketplace a solution for the creation of shelf labels, but also two desktop printers for printing the tags at the end user location. In 1987 ELT sold its service bureau operation to Dunn and Bradstreet and focused strictly on the growth of in-store printing systems and the conversion of vinyl label stock.
