Jodi and her family moved to Bend in 2001. She has worked with children for most of her career – for many years as the owner and manager of a private daycare. She began training and working with Elemental Eyecare and discovered a passion for building relationships, teaching new skills, and offering hope to her patients as a Vision Therapist.

Following graduation she completed a primary care and surgical co management residency program at the John Wainwright Memorial VA medical center in Walla Walla, Washington and the Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute in Kennewick, Washington. Dr. Balsalobre then spent the next six years in private practice in Eugene Oregon. In 2011 she accepted a position at Group Health Cooperative in Seattle Washington, but soon learned that she much preferred living in a smaller community which has brought her to Central Oregon. She has been practicing at Elemental Eyecare since October of 2011 and has found working with the pediatric population to be quite rewarding and enjoys the new challenges that each day brings. Given her extensive training at the VA Hospital she is finding working with patients who have suffered from traumatic brain injury (TBI) very rewarding.

After your child has had an examination to asses eye health and prescription needs, we offer a full functional, developmental and perceptual evaluation. This work-up tells us how your child uses their eyes and brain together to process and understand their vision. It also gives us a baseline for vision therapy as we assess learning styles, evaluate motor development and their level of sensory integration. We will also perform a computerized recording and statistical analysis of eye tracking on a Visagraph. This evaluation is required in order to design an effective vision therapy program. If you are being referred from your primary eye doctor for possible vision therapy, this evaluation is scheduled after your initial office visit with Dr. Gabby or Dr. Amanda. After this information is collected, the vision therapist and the doctor will meet and review the findings. Then a conference will be scheduled to discuss the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis for your child. We take special care to develop a treatment plan that is effective and achievable, keeping in mind family dynamics and scheduling issues. We ask that all parents or guardians be present for this meeting, but no children.

Life is better with good vision and good visual skills. Our goal is to provide a meaningful experience that will enable a child to develop those skills. In doing so, we have designed an environment that is comfortable yet challenging, supportive but educational, and most importantly effective. Vision is more than just 20/20, but good acuity is important for proper development. We support proper development by encouraging infant exams, using the best eyeglass material available and providing fully integrative vision therapy. The Elemental team also believes in supporting our community by volunteering our time and services to help those in need.
