Description
Silvopasture combines grazing with tree production. Cattle stocking rates must be low enough to prevent compaction and woodland degradation. We plan to carefully balance these systems to maintain harmony between cattle and trees and native plants. Our existing open field pastures are only about 15 acres total. The remaining pasture is mixed aged stands of white and red oak, spruce, fir, aspen, black cherry, butternut, and birch. We are using experts from the Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, common sense, and experience to balance optimum forage and woodland productivity while protecting our small wetlands that are within the pastured areas.
