IAED is saddened by the passing of Assistant Chief W. Mark Braswell. He will be sorely missed. Mark was an active member of the Fire Council of Standards for over 10 years and a huge promoter of Fire Protocol. He brought both the medical and fire protocols to his agency, Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department (the largest volunteer department in the country). Cy-Fair is an EFD ACE.

Version 6 gives emergency fire dispatchers (EFDs) the ability to provide lifesaving Pre-Arrival Instructions (PAIs) and Post-Dispatch Instructions (PDIs) covering 26 Chief Complaints, an increase of three protocols since the release of FPDS v.5 in 2009. The new version 6 operates on the Paramount ProQA platform, incorporating all the same options available to MPDS and PPDS users, plus special features dedicated to fire response.

Charlotte Hughlett—Former IAED Associate Director I had the pleasure of knowing Mark through work at IAED when I was sent to Cy-Fair many years ago to teach the dispatchers how to use the Fire Protocols that were being implemented in the Cy-Fair VFD. He was dedicated to excellence for the Cy-Fair VFD and ensured his department became an Accredited Center of Excellence. The love he had for his family was always evident even though he was dedicated to his work. His commitment to having fun when off duty as a firefighter was also obvious to those of us that had the pleasure of knowing Mark.

Since the actual treatment of ischemic stroke became a possibility and then a more viable reality in many EMS systems, the IAED has worked with several stroke centers, experts, and early on, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to concurrently evolve the Dispatch Life Support (DLS) treatment of stroke patients. A joint position statement was crafted by the Academy with the lead stroke researcher at NIH, Dr. John Marler.
