Description
Ken and Margaret Schaden and their 11 children run the End of the Commons General Store, located at routes 87 and 534, just 6 miles east of Middlefield. They sell over 800 products in bulk to Amish families who shop for their own large families and cook mostly from scratch. Most arrive at the store in horse-drawn buggies, which are parked out front at the hitching rail.Like its name indicates, the store is at the end of the park-like central commons. It is surrounded by 30 century homes, the oldest of which was built in 1816. Amish man Eli Miller runs a harness shop around the corner. The Schadens found what they were looking for in Mesopotamia. They purchased the general store in 1982. Ken was born and raised in Chicago. He was transferred to Cleveland and for 14 years he worked for a Cleveland clothing manufacturer. His position was to coordinate all of the clothing operations in the Orient with those operations in Cleveland. This obviously meant a considerable amount of traveling to the Orient and to various cities along our West Coast where clothing entered the United States through customs. Due to the constant travel and pressures that came with this position, Ken and his family felt that a change of jobs would be in order.
