Hacking First things first; need to upgrade the drive. I didn't want to go through all the hassle of upgrading the kernel to support LBA48 so I decided to put in a 120 gig Maxtor drive. Having hung around on Dealtime and AVS TiVo forums for quite awhile, I knew the series 1 drive upgrade was a piece of cake. I read through Steve Jenkins' Network HOW-TO Guide and Hinsdale's HOW-TO Upgrade guide Using these two documents, it was easy to upgrade and I was running more space within no time. Next I needed to get the TiVo networked. Off to 9th Tee for my TurboNET . I also wanted a really nice install so I put in a RJ-45 coupler so that I was not hard wired to the internals of the box. I think that this turned out great. After getting a telnet and FTP connection going, of course I needed to install VI, because all other editors pale in its greatness! I found a copy for the series 1 on the net, along with a copy of PS for the Series 1. Got these all installed and I am stylin' Finally, the only reason that I was really doing this (other than just to do it) is so that I could get the ty streams extracted. For this I first needed to disable scrambling during recording. The best way to do this came after many other good way had be tried (kernel hacks, noscramble, etc). It took just about 1 minute to hack tivoapp following the post from AlphaWolf . After that I installed both TyStudio and TyTools . I am not sure which I am going to use right now, but I have tried them both, and they seem to work great. Luckily I have a copy of Adobe Premiere that I will use to edit. Local Copies Some things that I have wanted WRT TiVo hacking have disappeared over time, so I like to keep a local copy. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. I would think that everyone keeps a copy of the software and docs that they use while creating their own masterpieces. I just wanted to keep them here so I can find them.
