Description
Often times when speaking to prospective clients who attend one of our Executive Briefings the subject comes up; “Why is a Mission Statement so important for my business”? This is a very special moment because almost without fail at the end of our discussion on the subject they walk away with a very special “Ahaaa” moment. It all starts with their Vision or dream. It’s where you want to go, what you want to be. It’s that unrealistic unobtainable dream that sparks the spirit of the Entrepreneur. Our vision at Estrada Strategies is “Create an opportunity for all businesses to succeed”. Is this realistic? Can we reach every business on the planet and help them succeed, perhaps not, but don’t tell that to Ruben, his team and our clients. The “Mission Statement” is where you start to show how this dream is going to become a reality. You identify major goals that must be accomplished. You identify how you plan to operate as you go about meeting your major goals. You identify significant factors that will be necessary for you to reach those goals: the products or services you will provide, the kind of people you will need to serve. In short, it’s who you are, who you serve, what you do that makes you unique in the market you serve. How to write a Mission Statement check list; o List your organizations core competencies, its unique strengths & weaknesses. o List your organizations primary customers, internal or external, by type, not by name. o Review how each customer relates to each of the organization’s strengths. Ask them if possible. o Write a sentence description of each customer / strength pairing. o List the sentence in order of importance to your organization’s vision, if one exists. o Combine the top three to five sentences into a paragraph. o Ask your customer if they want to do business with an organization with that mission. o Ask your employee’s if they understand and support it and can act on it. o Incorporate the feedback from your customers, employees, and suppliers, and repeat the process. o When you have refined the paragraph into statements that clearly says the way the company wants to relate to those it affects, publish it to everyone. Post it on the wall, email it to everyone, etc. Our Mission Statement at Estrada Strategies is “Our mission is to lead our small to medium sized business clients to greater success. Our method is to bring about Behavior Modification through coaching, training, and monitoring to affect change. We advance our mission by serving as the business example for our clients” An effective mission statement provides strategic vision and direction for the organization and should not have to be reviewed every few years. It should be stable to cope with the changing economic climate. Until next time, “you know your next move” Mark Barragan CEO Coach Estrada Strategies, Chino California
