Lake Vermilion is an absolute joy to fish and explore with it's 1200 miles of shoreline, 356 islands, and 40,000 acres of sky blue water. Since 1969, The Department of Natural Resources has been stocking Walleye in Lake Vermilion and maintains a hatchery on the lake from which most all northern Minnesota lakes are stocked. In the past few years, in excess of 33,000,000 Walleye fry have been returned annually to Lake Vermilion from the DNR hatchery. That, combined with "catch and release" practices, assures future fish populations for generations to come. The Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness Borders the north shore of Lake Vermilion. Taking BWCA Entry Point #1, a short portage from Lake Vermilion will lead you into the BWCAW and Trout Lake. (Permits Required) Since we are north of the Laurentian Divide, all of our water flows north into the Vermilion River, Voyageurs National Park and eventually all the way to the Hudson Bay. Here at Everett Bay Lodge, we take our fishing pretty seriously and have a fun time too! We are pleased to offer our expertise and lake knowledge with a smile, catering to families that know little about fishing to many expert amateurs and several professionals also. We will guide you to where and how to fish lake Vermilion in detail from the resort and if you want an on water guide - just let us know and we will arrange it for you with one of the local independent guides for either Vermilion or Trout Lake in the BWCAW. Guides run about $325/day and all you need to bring is clothing, gear and your fishing equipment if you want. (ask for more details) So whatever species you are after - we will provide you with the time proven techniques to catch fish! The Muskie action on Vermilion has exploded in the past several years to an unbelievable level. But the other good news is there is still little pressure for fishing spots - so if you're into Muskie you should be into Vermilion!! Lake Vermilion "Muskie" Facts DNR has been stocking since 1985 - usually 5000/yr and has now gone to every other year stocking since the population is doing so well. A good number of 50"+ fish now in lake - largest reported is 56" in '02. These are Leech Lake Strain Muskies - Minimum length is 40" but DNR is looking into a total catch-and-release policy to get the size to 48 or 50". The 2002 Muskie outing in July for the FRV Muskie Incorporated posted their best results yet. They beat 2000 by eight Muskie. Fish tend to be thicker & heavier fish than elsewhere - good supply of bait fish - mainly sucker & whitefish Most fish in Vermilion relate to rocky structure vs. weed beds due to low number of weed beds in Vermilion with most fish ranging in size from 40" to 48". We hope that all fish will be properly handled and released. Variety of baits produce fish from Black Bucktails, Tally Whackers, Crank Baits, and even live Sucker Minnows. Best outings include: 19 fish for 3 boats in one evening; 9 fish for one boat in one day; many youth 12-14 years old are catching big fish too!
