Description

FEGS Health & Human Services was born out of the Great Depression, when millions of Americans were struggling to provide for themselves and their families. FEGS, which stands for Federation Employment and Guidance Service, was established in 1934 to combat discrimination in the workplace and to help New Yorkers prepare for and find jobs. Since then, the organization has evolved into one of the largest health and human services agencies in the country, expanding and diversifying to meet the many needs of the community.

During this time of great change in the health care landscape, FEGS continues to leverage its experience to develop new ways to improve healthcare and outcomes with greater efficiency. For more than 40 years, we have been a recognized leader in helping individuals and families facing complex health care needs. We provide a comprehensive network of services and supports that enable New Yorkers across the life span to improve their health and quality of life and live in the community as independently as possible.

Born out of the Great Depression, Federation Employment Service (FES) was founded in 1934 by the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies (now UJA-Federation of New York), to find employment for tens of thousands of unemployed men and women in the Jewish and broader New York community and to fight workplace discrimination. Following World War II, our name was changed to Federation Employment & Guidance Service (FEGS), reflecting the agency’s significant career work with returning veterans, individuals with disabilities, older adults, and many others.

By partnering with FEGS, you can join a highly respected, dedicated organization with a long-standing and successful history of meeting the complex needs of individuals facing a range of challenges, while meeting your business, philanthropic, marketing, and community relations objectives. FEGS was founded in 1934, during the depths of the Great Depression. The organization sought to assist Jewish and other men and women to identify, prepare for, and find suitable jobs and to fight discrimination in the workplace. Our founders recognized the inherent personal, social, and economic strength one derives from having a job and being able to take care of oneself and one’s family. Nearly 80 years later, employment and workforce readiness remains a cornerstone of FEGS’s work.
