Description
The Pennsylvania Department of Education honored both Ferndale Area Elementary School and Ferndale Area Junior/Senior High School with a Keystone Achievement Award in recognition of the schools' outstanding academic performance. The Keystone Achievement Award is given to a public school that has achieved adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years. This year's award is for meeting AYP standards in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years. AYP is determined in part by a school's performance on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment; the standardized test is given annually to students in grades 3, 8 and 11. This is the school's fourth Keystone Achievement Award. Education Secretary Gerald L. Zahorchak said the award is a testament to the tremendous efforts of the students, teachers, and staff at Ferndale Area School District. "We have set high academic expectations in Pennsylvania, and the students of Ferndale Area School District have responded in an impressive way," he said. Each school that earns a Keystone Achievement Award receives a large, keystone-shaped placard that can be displayed at the school. "If there is one award that a school should proudly show off to visitors, it is the Keystone Achievement Award," Secretary Zahorchak said. "It is proof to all who visit the school that they are at an institution that cares about ensuring that every child succeeds." Since 2004, the Department of Education has partnered with the Pennsylvania Association of Federal Program Coordinators to present the Keystone Achievement Awards as a public recognition of the quality work and commitment shown by students and educators.
