First Environment was founded in New Jersey in 1977 under the name of Groundwater Technology. Our initial focus was guided around dewatering projects and the control of contaminated groundwater. Today, we continue to reflect these roots with our strong presence in the site investigation and remediation field where we maintain our tradition of practical problem solving and innovation. The firm’s name was changed to First Environment in 1987 to better reflect the broad range of environmental services provided by the firm.Our ability to look forward and anticipate what is needed in the environmental field is an important component of our culture and history. In 1997, we became the first environmental consulting firm in the western hemisphere to achieve ISO 14001 certification for our Environmental Management System (EMS), a status which we maintain today.Within one year of beginning this effort, our EMS was certified by a third party registrar as conforming to the ISO 14001 standard. The initial certification included the New Jersey and Georgia offices, while offices in Mississippi and Puerto Rico were registered in 1998. In 2004, the offices in Illinois and Washington, DC became the most recent offices to be registered.
