In early 1988, a group of investors led by Billy Bowling began work necessary to found a new bank in Colbert County, Alabama. The group felt the citizens of Colbert County and the surrounding counties of Northwest Alabama would be better served by a community bank. After approximately six months of planning, the application for a bank charter was submitted in June, 1988 and preliminary approval was given in August, 1988, thus the beginning of First Metro Bank (the Bank).With approximately $4,290,000 in initial capital and its bank charter in hand, the Bank opened its doors on November 7, 1988, in a mobile unit at 406 West Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The initial subscription involved 400 shareholders, with each one limited to no more than 2.3% ownership.The Bank's initial projection was to achieve $30,000 growth in assets after the first three years. At the end of the third year of operation, First Metro has almost doubled its projection.
