Originally established in 1988 in New York City, First Books began as a literary agency and book packager. An early success was the bestselling Dan Quayle Quiz Book (Little Brown & Co., 1988). Since 1988, First Books has agented or packaged over 100 published books. In 1992, after the purchase of TLC & Co., publisher of the Newcomer's Handbook for New York City and the Neighborhood Guide to New York City, First Books became a publisher and recruiting/relocation service provider. In the new millennium, First Books expanded into custom publishing with the launch of its successful imprint, Inkwater Press, which offers authors a low-cost, high-quality entry into the exciting and competitive world of book publishing. For most of the 1990s, First Books was located in Chicago. Today, First Books is headquartered in beautiful Portland, Oregon.
