Description
Patrick John Foley graduated from Stanford University in 1966. He attended law school at Boalt Hall, University of California, graduating in 1982 and beginning his practice in that year. Pat is a specialist in Employee Benefits, especially ERISA (the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974) and related law. He represents both individuals and businesses, and is experienced in both the creation and maintenance of employee benefit plans of all sorts. He represents a number of charities, including many Roman Catholic dioceses, and has written IRA and other related documents for the use of large financial institutions in their sales to the public. Pat enjoys the complexity of his field, and is widely acknowledged as an expert on many of the details of the law of employee benefits, both from the employer's side and from the employee's side, as well as the view of big financial institutions which oversee such plans. Pat and Susan have been married since September of 1966, and they have four children and three grandchildren. They have been practicing law together for almost fifteen years. Susan Evans Foley graduated from Stanford University in 1966, and earned a Master's Degree in American History at the University of California at Berkeley in 1970. She studied law at Hastings College of the Law, University of California, where she was on the Law Review, and graduated in the top 5% of her class in 1977. Susan received her training after law school in several large firms in San Francisco, where she specialized in tax law, and worked also in real estate and large bank financing transactions. She now concentrates her practice on tax law, estate planning , probate , real estate, and the representation of small businesses. She is experienced in the formation of all business forms, including partnerships, limited partnerships, Limited Liability Companies and corporations, both C-Corporations and S-Corporations. She is also experienced in the formation and representation of charitable organizations. Susan enjoys the intellectual challenges of her work, but derives most of her satisfaction from the people with whom she works, both clients and other parties. She is glad to make "house calls" either at the residence of a client or at his or her office, at the client's convenience, and she does not bill for travel time, only for the time actually spent at the meeting. Because some of her clients have limited mobility or limited time flexibility, she finds that this is a popular feature of her practice. She will also meet clients in her office, of course, which is centrally located in downtown Oakland. Brief initial consultations are free. A Personal Note concerning Special Needs Trusts One of Pat and Susan's children, a son now 24 years old, is mentally ill, and is currently receiving Supplimental Security Income (SSI) from Social Security. His medical needs are covered by MediCal (Medicare). He is living on the streets. Accordingly, Susan is well aquainted not just with the law in this area, and with what parents can do to attempt to protect such a child financially, but also with the emotional difficulties any parent of a troubled child experiences.
