Wally was attending a local college between 1950-1953 and worked as a delivery person for Springfield Medical Supply. For reasons unknown to him, the parent company, Boston Medical, closed Springfield Medical in 1953.Meanwhile, a 100 year-old company from Springfield, called Dentists and Surgeons, decided to give up wholesale sales of medical equipment to area doctors because of the recent loss of its sales force to Bridgeport Medical. So Wally borrowed $350.00 from a local bank and purchased the inventory and customer list.Footit detailed doctors, hospitals and nursing homes until 1955 when he decided to open a retail location on Eastern Avenue. He had been keeping an eye on the market in Boston and saw that the surgical appliances business was expanding due to the increase of surgeries and hospital discharges. His business plan was correct so to accommodate his success in the retail market, Footit moved his store once more in 1963 to the "X" in the Forest Park section of Springfield, MA. His compassion, sense of humor and long relationship with area doctors made Footit a favorite with the doctors when prescribing products for their patients. For years his advertising slogan was "Your doctor knows us".
