WHY HYDRAULIC POWER? During the early years of casing driver use, the only drivers available were pneumatically powered. Now drillers have an option of using hydraulically powered casing drivers. Why should you choose hydraulic instead of pneumatic? DRILLING EFFICIENCY Air driven (pneumatic) casing drivers require large amounts of compressed air to operate, many use 300-400 CFM. The compressed air normally used downhole is diverted to operate the casing driver. Diverting the air to the casing driver slows the drilling process, cuttings removal and may cause problems in heaving conditions. Powering the casing driver with hydraulics leaves all the compressed air for drilling. ENERGY SAVINGS Pneumatic power is an inefficient energy source. Hydraulic power is highly efficient! Air powered casing drivers require more energy in compressed air to drive casing than energy required by hydraulics. With fuel costs high, why spend more money than necessary driving casing?
