Description

An Autist, or Autistic, is an individual occupying the broad range of human neurodiversity (neurological diversity) known as Autism. While Autism may be specified in several different categories, there is a growing tendency to regard it as a multifaceted spectrum. Popular stereotypes frequently portray Autists as being thoroughly, or substantially, helpless and unable to express their wants and needs. Much to the contracy, however, the majority of Autists can, given the appropriate supports, lead happy, fulfilling, and productive lives. Additionally, it might well be pointed out that no one, Autist or otherwise, is truly independent. Each of us requires constant outside supports (the power and phone companies, the supermarket, gasoline/petrol stations, the Internet, a job, customers, etc.). Except during rare moments, as in a power blackout, we simply take these amenities for granted. Consequently, disability is a socially and historically relative category, not a fixed set of biological traits. If the needs of Autists were met in a particular society, they would not, within that context, be disabled. Similarly, if the needs of left-handed persons were thoroughly ignored in favor of right-handed individuals, then a degree of disability would be associated with left-handedness. Finally, please note that the capitalizations of Autism, Autist, Autistic, Autistic Community, etc. on these websites are intentional. Following a convention which may have originated within the Deaf Community, capitalizing our words affirms us as participants in, and members of, an emerging culture.
