To realize the Biennial’s Arab exhibitions and programs, FotoFest has commissioned one of the world’s leading experts on contemporary Arab art, Karin Adrian von Roques, as the principal curator. Ms. von Roques has worked for over 20 years in the Middle East with exhibitions and publications on contemporary Arab art. She is one of the first curators in Europe to have initiated a series of exhibitions strategically aimed at bringing the work of Arab artists to the attention of a broader, international public.
The Arab exhibitions will be one of the most important presentations of Arab contemporary art to be done in the United States. Karin Adrian von Roques is the lead curator and one of the world’s leading experts on contemporary Arab art. She has worked for over 20 years in the Middle East with exhibitions and publications on Islamic and contemporary Arab art.
The centerpiece of FotoFest's Biennial exhibitions program is an exhibition of contemporary Arab photography and media atr. 49 prominent contemporary Arab artists from 13 countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The exhibitions are curated by Karin Adrian von Roques , a German curator with over 20 years experience working with Arab artists, institutions and publications. Ms. von Roques is curating the Biennial exhibitions with FotoFest Senior Curator and Co-Founder Wendy Watriss.
FotoFest was founded in 1983 by documentary photographers and journalists, Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss , and European gallery director, Petra Benteler. The first biennial, citywide Month of Photography was held in 1986 in Houston, Texas.
